Kelp is a type of seaweed, specifically classified as a brown algae. It grows in shallow areas of the ocean, in underwater, forests, it requires nutrient-rich water at temperatures below about 20°c (68°f) and is known for its high growth rate. Norway and Japan are two popular Kelp producers. There are more than 300 different types of Kelp.

Consumption of Kelp dates back to 300 B.C. In the Republic of China. The Japanese have been eating it for 1,500 years. And it has been part of the Icelandic diet for centuries. Ancient Polynesian and Asian civilizations would use Kelp as sacred offerings to Gods, as it was considered to be a food fit for royalty.

Kelp contains important vitamins, major and trace chelated minerals, and key amino acids. Included in that list are vitamins A, D, E, and K. In addition it contains riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, and vitamins B6 and B12. It is a good source of calcium, magnesium, choline, iron, zinc, selenium, biotin, and dietary fiber. It is of great importance to growing puppies.

Kelp is said to be useful for its anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-rheumatic properties, in addition to its ability to cleanse the digestive tract. The trace minerals found in Kelp help to product the enzymes which allow your pet to digest food more efficiently.

Pets experiencing dry, flaky, or itchy skin, hair loss or excessive shedding, or dull coat may benefit from Kelp. It can also enhance coat pigmentation. The protein in Kelp is highly bio-available, which allows pets to efficiently assimilate its amino acids so they can assist in tissue repair. It might also be helpful for allergies, and may assist in repelling fleas,

The iodine in Kelp helps to stimulate the thyroid gland, thereby increasing the metabolic rate. This may help with weight reduction for pets who are overweight, or suffer from thyroid conditions, as well as with maintenance of ideal weight. Improved metabolism is also said to optimize glandular and immune functions, and may prove especially effective for senior and immune-deficient pets. For underweight or finicky pets, it may help induce appetite.
