Native to Europe and part of the U.S., Milk Thistle, a member of the sunflower family, is an herb that grows up to six feet tall, with coarse, prickly-edged leaves. Its flowers are crimson to red-violet, and grow in solitary globular heads about two inches across.

With over 2,000 years of history, from the ancient Greeks to modern European physicians, Milk Thistle is one of the most popular and effective medicinal herbs in existence. It was not until 1968, however, that silymarin, a flavonoid compound, was isolated from the seeds of the plant, and found to be the active constituent.

Known as the powerhouse of natural liver supplements for pets, Milk Thistle is said to repair and regenerate damaged liver cells, strengthening resistance to harmful toxins. It also may be useful in treating other liver-related illnesses, such as inflammatory liver disorders, acute or viral hepatitis, liver cancer, leptospirosis, pancreatitis, and fatty liver.

A pet on conventional drugs or medication (for example, phenobarbital or Nsaids), or even chemotherapy, can benefit from Milk Thistle's therapeutic detoxification. It could also be effective in reducing toxicity associated with the pet's environment, such as use of household insecticides, pesticides, and chemical cleaning products, as well as lead or zinc poisoning.

Milk Thistle is thought to be a blood cleanser, and an immunity booster.

It has also been given to pets being treated for kidney disease, to minimize the severity and onset of diabetes and cardiac disease, and to help in the early stages of liver enzyme elevation. Additionally, it may act as a decongestant to the gall bladder.
