There are 39 species of Lavender, which is actually a member of the mint family. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens world-wide, they are occasionally found growing wild as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. Since Lavender cross-pollinates easily, there are countless variations within the species.
For more than 2,500 years, the use of Lavender has been documented. Egyptians, Phoenicians and Arabians made a perfume of it. They also incorporated it into mummification, using Lavender-dipped fabric to encase the deceased. In ancient Greece, Lavender was a treatment for everything from insomnia, to aches, to insanity. By Roman times, Lavender had become a prized commodity — commonly scenting Roman baths. Lavender was highly revered during the Great Plague of London in the 17th century, when bunches of it were fastened to each wrist to protect citizens from the Black Death.
Veterinarians in England use Lavender oil to get rid of lice and other animal parasites. Lavender is said to be an effective flea and tick repellent. Since it is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, it can be applied onto the skin to relieve itching from flea bites and rashes, discomfort from burns, and to prevent infection in cuts and abrasions.
Lavender has been known as a sedative. It could be useful during extended travel and car rides, and to help quiet an incessantly barking dog. It may also help decrease insomnia, anxiety, and nervous behavior.
In Spain, Lavender is used to treat diabetes and insulin resistance.
Lavender may relieve pain and stiffness in older pets when applied topically via an oil blend. It might prove helpful in treating coughs and respiratory infections when added to a vaporizer. Additionally, it is known to increase immunity, and promote proper digestion by stimulating gastric function.
